March 17, 2020

Dear Akron School District Community,

The Akron School District has been monitoring the COVID-19 Corona-virus that has led to declarations of emergency at the national and state level and subsequent closures and cancellations of events.  As a district we have followed the communications and been in close contact with several local and state agencies that have included the Northeast Colorado Health Department, Washington County Emergency Manager, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the Colorado Department of Education (CDE).

At this time, we feel it is important to show great caution and allow for the situation to stabilize.  With that purpose in mind, the Akron School District has decided to extend spring break to March 29th, 2020 with school resuming on March 30th, 2020.  The Akron School District is also cancelling all before and after school activities taking place in our buildings or on our school grounds for both school and community through March 29th.

We are not aware of any confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Washington County at this time, but we do want to be proactive and emphasize the recommended practice of social distancing and avoiding large gatherings of people.  Stopping the spread of the virus through everyday practices is the best way to keep people healthy.  A few things to practice diligently:  wash your hands with soap and water often, cover coughs and sneezes, and staying home while sick.

We are tentatively planning to meet with our teachers at some point next week to develop plans for providing instruction for our students and breakfast/lunch should we not be able to resume school as planned on March 30th.   We will be using our different forms of school communication (email, text, website live feed, and school Facebook) to let you know if additional school closure is required.

In the interest of helping to dispel rumors and fear, we are providing the following link to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention which has the most up to date information.

This is a difficult time for everyone with lives being disrupted and daily practices changing in response to this virus. Please know that we will be working diligently to make the best of this difficult situation.   We thank you for your cooperation!

Sincerely,

Brian Christensen
