THANK YOU! As a school district we recently reached out for some help in purchasing 100 yard signs and other items to uniquely recognize our senior students. It took asking for some help from our Booster Club and Lions Club for those organizations and several individuals in our Akron community to step up and cover the entire cost of the signs and other items. We feel so fortunate and grateful to have the support of an amazing community that is filled with generous people. The Akron School District would like to thank the following: Akron Booster Club, Akron Lions Club, Patrick and Stephanie O’Neil, Fred and Dencia Raish, Mason and Kelly Hansen, and Derek Glosson.
Akron 6-12 teachers are going to present our Academic Awards throughout the week next week. Please check often as we will begin posting on Monday, May 11th. Congratulation to Mr. Clarkson's math students. Click on link to see his awards video. https://youtu.be/8wn1jYahHPA

Akron Preschool Applications: The Akron Preschool Program is still accepting applications for the 2020-2021 school year. The preschool is located in the Akron Schools at 600 Elm Avenue. The Akron Preschool Program serves children with a wide variety of needs, including children with typical development and children with special needs, in order to create a community of learners, one with an appropriate and enriching learning environment and experience for all. The daily schedule provides for a combination of whole group, small group, and individualized instruction, as well as learning through center-based activities. Children are given opportunities to interact with peers and adults in the classroom as well as during outside play. The preschool teachers are highly qualified in early childhood education. Classes are in session Monday through Thursday, with Thursday being a half day. Applications are currently available at the Akron Schools and can be picked up in the entryway at the office. It is also available on our school website under Menu and the Elementary School tab. O’Neil Places 2nd at State Essay Contest Each year 4th graders create posters and write essays for an FCE (Family Community and Education) contest called Character Counts. The contest requires students to address one of the 6 Pillars of Character. This year students wrote about Respect. Members of Washington County FCE select the winners and the county winner advances to the state contest. This year’s county winner was Molly O’Neil. Molly’s essay and poster about respect moved on to the State FCE contest where her entry finished 2nd. Molly will receive a prize and be recognized at a ceremony in June. Akron Ram Students and Parents, I hope this communication finds you doing well and staying safe. The past several weeks has been a challenge for everyone and the lifestyles we are used to living. Throughout each week, we as a school and community, have waited for guidance and communication from the Governor, while planning for an uncertain future. As far as school and instruction, we found out last week that we would finish the school year outside of our brick and mortar building. Today, as I looked back at the different communications that have been put out to all of you, I found the one from March 19th when the suspension of in-person learning started. I believe the words I shared on that day still hold true as we not only finish our school year but continue to move forward with the challenges brought about by this virus. The words I shared on that day referred to us not missing the teachable moments and acknowledging that the best lessons we might teach our students through this ordeal may just be the life skills of managing change, being patient, dealing with uncertainty, being flexible, and caring for one another during times of struggle. I hope that we have all practiced and modeled these skills and that we continue to do so long after this pandemic has ended. We have encouraged you to look for additional information about plans for the remainder of the school year. After consulting with our school board, building principals, and teachers, we have amended our school calendar to address the following: conclusion of emergency alternative instruction, providing of additional student support, conducting end of year awards ceremonies, and collection of school materials. Please find the amended calendar structure below. We will continue to work on plans and details for this new structure and will keep you informed of any changes. Dear Akron Ram Families, This morning I was part of a conference call with Governor Polis, Commissioner of Education, Katy Anthes, and Superintendents from around the state. During this meeting we were informed by the Governor that in-person education will be suspended for the remainder of the 2019-20 school year. We have been hopeful that we could get students back into the classroom at some point this year but that is not going to happen. With that guidance, we will continue our emergency alternative form of instruction that we have put in place to finish this school year. Our principals are working with our staff in their virtual staff meetings this week to plan for the remainder of the year. The school facilities will remain closed during this time. As far as prom, graduation, weight room use, summer camps, etc. we are following the guidelines from the governor’s office. Our senior students are part of our thoughts and plans, and we have reached out to them and their parents for feedback on different possibilities for holding graduation. If we are able to send students to camps and open the weight room, we will but not until we get the recommendation from the Governor. We ask that you please remain flexible and understanding as we continue to work through the rest of the year. Please look for further communications on calendar and end of year events as we move forward in this process. We thank you for your engagement and support! Brian Christensen

Akron Ram Students and Families, As you may have already heard, the Governor has extended his Executive Order suspending in-person instruction until April 30th. Please know that the plans we have put in place for alternative instruction during this mandatory time away from the building will continue. Our staff has put in a great deal of time and effort to provide on-line platforms and packet types of materials for students. Our top priorities as we start this new style of learning continue to be student well-being, relationships, and communication. We feel like if these priorities are in place along with technical support, we will be successful. The school and its staff thank you as students and parents for your patience and understanding this past week and a half, as we have put together programs and started to make connections. We are excited and encouraged by what has already taken place with our staff, students and parents and look forward to working together to make the weeks ahead even better. As we work together to navigate this new type of instruction, please don't hesitate to reach out to us if you encounter problems or need support. Sincerely, Your School Family

After a couple hours of handing items back to students we have discovered we can handle more families. If you would like to come early and pick up your student's items please do so.
Akron Ram Students and Families, This is a friendly reminder that tomorrow, Thursday, March 26, we have scheduled a school curb-side pick-up for student materials. Please find the schedule is at the bottom of this message. We ask that you REMAIN IN YOUR VEHICLE for the pick-up. If you are unable to pick items up tomorrow, feel free to call the school to schedule a time to have materials delivered to the curbside at a different time. As the Akron teachers send materials home tomorrow, we want to be clear about our intentions during this time. Please know that our primary concern during this time, is the wellbeing of every one of our students. We are educators and of course we want to support our students academically as well. First, though, we are focusing on connecting with our students and supporting their ability to connect with us virtually. Our relationships with our kids is priority right now. We want you to know that: • We understand that there are families who wish for lots of support and school work for their students, while others are not able to help their students with academic work at this time. We are trying to be both ends of this spectrum for you. • We understand that every family has its own situation and that not everyone is easily able to access the internet or have devices for their children to utilize. • We are simply sending home SUGGESTED schedules and GUIDELINES for homework. No one, here at school, is expecting all of the work to be completed by a certain deadline and we are not asking for completed assignments to be turned in right now. • It is not our intention to add stress to any household. The level of work we provide you is designed to MAINTAIN skills, not learn new concepts. Please do not feel obligated to be a home-school parent. • We are here for you all and doing our best to help your family during this time. • We want to support every student with whatever their needs are and know that virtual connections are a tremendous challenge for our teachers. Many teachers also have their own children at home while they are trying to work. Please be patient, every teacher is working hard to balance all their professional and personal tasks. • We are sending home textbooks, Chromebooks and other materials that are property of the school. Please take care of these materials and know that we will expect them to be returned to the school. • We STRONGLY URGE our students to follow the social distancing guidelines. We want the health threat to end and believe that in following the CDC and medical professional’s guidelines, we can slow down the spread. We are moving forward in the following phases through April 17, 2020: Phase 1 (Week of March 23) - Staff connecting/planning/training, materials sent home to students and connecting virtually with our students. Meals provided. Communication from school to home daily. Phase 2 (Week of March 30) – Goal: Connect with 100% of our students virtually. This is our “Virtual Spirit Week” as well. Some suggested learning can be discussed/shared and additional meals and materials provided to students. 6-12 grade teachers attempt to hold “Virtual Office Hours” as a support to students. (Given connections are functional.) Frequent communication from school to home. *CURB-SIDE MEAL PICK-UP WILL CHANGE TIME TO 11 A.M. – 12 P.M.(NOON) Phase 3 (Week of April 6) – Goal: Continued meals support. Continued connections to students. Elementary and Secondary hold “Virtual Office Hours” to provide online support to students. (Given connections are functional.) We want our students to know that we are missing them and working hard this week to support them during their time away from school. Love, Your School Family
Reminder: If you signed up for breakfast and lunch for your student, meal distribution will take place today and Thursday from 3:30 - 4:30 PM. If your student is not signed up but they want the meals please stop by during that time, we made some additional just in case.

The program gives school districts an additional level of accountability and provides feedback for continuous improvement. The review process involves collecting multiple points of data that include document review, survey, focus group interviews, and school and classroom observation. The information gained from the review helps schools identify areas of strength and areas where they can focus their efforts for improvement.
